Before she heard about TLM, Opportunity International’s partner in West Timor, Betriana Lilly was struggling to make ends meet. With three small children to provide for, she didn’t always know where the next meal would come from. She was running a small business selling betel nuts, but was only earning Rp.10,000 (A$1.45) a day. When a field officer from TLM visited her village and explained their programs, she and some of her friends decided to form a Trust Bank.
Hope through TLM
Betriana has now received three loans, two in the Trust Bank (group lending) program and one Achiever loan. The Achiever loan is designed for high achieving clients who need access to greater sized loans. Betriana’s latest loan is 2.5 million rupiahs (A$363). She likes this loan program because it is more tailored to her business and has a longer repayment term.
With the improvements to her business, Betriana’s profits have risen to Rp.30,000 (A$4.35) a day. She has increased the quantity of her stock and, having implemented TLM’s training and advice, is now attracting more customers. Her product, betel nuts, are popular in West Timor, as they are cut and chewed in a manner similar to tobacco. The nuts, which are usually rubbed with lime and wrapped in betel leaves, produce large amounts of red saliva when chewed, turning the gums and lips bright red.
Dreams for the future
As the business grows, Betriana’s confidence increases and she makes plans for the future. She hopes to buy a house one day as she is currently renting. Her ultimate goal is to replace her present business stall with a permanent kiosk. She is proud of what she has achieved so far, and she is sure that with TLM’s help these dreams will become reality.
