Maharasi, GO Finance, India

Maharasi lives with her husband and three young children, in Dooming Kuppam, a slum near the seashore in the south of India. Maharasi and her husband both run their own businesses. Maharasi sells sarees (a traditional dress) and her husband makes envelopes.

Maharasi was excited when she heard about IMED’s Trust Bank program because a loan would enable her to buy in bulk from her wholesaler. This means she can receive a better price, and she can stock more sarees with different designs.

Maharasi joined the Trust Bank program, and after completing an eight-week induction, she received a loan of 10,000 Rupees (A$286). She used the loan to purchase additional sarees and diversify her business. She now also sells blouse material, salwar kameez material (traditional clothing of loose trousers and a long shirt), and petticoats.

Maharasi has found the training she receives during weekly Trust Bank meetings to be invaluable. She says that competition is very high in her business and it is important her prices are competitive, the products are good quality, and the designs are appealing and fashionable.

Maharasi now receives a greater, more consistent income from her business and for the first time in her life she has been able to commence saving. She plans to use her savings to help her husband build his envelope business, and also for the education of her children.

Being part of a Trust Bank has helped Maharasi improve her business, make friends, provide for her family, and grow in confidence.

DSBN is pleased to announce our first “More than just business” initiative - sponsorship of a "Trust Bank" in West Timor.

Eighty percent of the West Timor's population are considered poor and the majority live in rural areas where they are dependent on agricultural based activities for survival.  The need in West Timor is great as its people continue their struggle to survive.
