“When Rosalina came home and told me we had a loan to buy a new fishing net, I hugged her and my boys. I could now provide for my family again.”
Two years ago, Roberto 31, had a viable fishing business. He owned a traditional fishing boat and a net, which provided enough income for Roberto and his family. There was sometimes money left over for Robert and Rosalina to take their two children, aged nine and eight, on family outings.
The family wasn’t rich, even by Filipino standards, but they had enough to meet their needs. “I was proud to be able to support my family,” said Robert. “I always thought we were so lucky.”

Then a year ago, Roberto’s fishing net was damaged beyond repair, which made it impossible for him to operate his business. Not having enough money to replace the net, Robert was forced to work as a helper on other neighbours’ boats.
But his meagre income wasn’t enough to pay for his family’s needs. For a year, Rosalina scraped together money from here and there to pay for food and school fees for her boys.
“I did not know how we were going to survive,” said Rosalina. “We could no longer afford the boys’ education.”
The family were about to sell the rights to the land they live on, when they heard about DSPI, Opportunity’s partner in Luzon. With a loan of $AU100, Robert was able to purchase a new fishing net.
Now Robert is bringing home a healthy catch everyday. He earns enough to feed and clothe his boys and pay for their ongoing education. They hope to be able to see their boys go to university.
Rosalina has not forgotten her recent past. “We are so blessed,” she says. “And we want to be a blessing to others.”
Nowadays, when Roberto catches more than they need, Rosalina gives the fish away to poor neighbours. The couple also let their neighbours fish with Robert, so they too can earn a living. Now Roberto is blessing others with his “net income.”
